With a break in league action this week, the H-DNL leading Eureka boys enjoyed a successful trip to Bandon Dunes in Oregon.

Competing in a California vs. Oregon invitational tournament in wet and rainy conditions, all five Loggers whop made the trip won their individual groups.

Junior Talon Vigil, who is in the thick of an exciting battle for this year’s H-DNL title, continued his impressive season with a team-best round of 78.

The team depth, however, was on full display with all five Loggers shooting 88 or better.

Julian Goodman and Andrew Stewart tied for the second best team score of the day with identical rounds of 84, while Wyatt Zerlang shot an 87 and Jerome Lyons rounded out a good day for the Loggers with an 88.

Next up, the Loggers will play at the Ukiah High School Invitational on Monday before resuming league competition the following Thursday when they host round four of the H-DNL season at the Eureka Municipal Golf Course.

The Eureka boys have won all three rounds so far, but it has been close on each occasion, with the Arcata Tigers right on their heels.

The Loggers won the opening round by just two strokes, and followed that with a three-stroke victory in round two and a seven-stroke win early last week at Del Norte.

Halfway through league play they have a 12-stroke lead over the Tigers, which is a slender advantage with three rounds to go.

“We’re doing pretty well,” head coach Jimmy Rodgers said. “We’re holding on by the skin of our britches.”

The race for the individual championship also looks likely to go down to the final round of league play, with St. Bernard’s Jack Kramer leading Vigil by just four strokes.

“With Talon and Jack Kramer of St. Bernard’s, that’s going to go down to the wire,” Rodgers said.

Next week’s league action at Eureka gets under way at 11 a.m.
