WaveRiders go out in style with tournament championship

The WaveRiders said goodbye in style over the weekend.

Playing in their final games, the local volleyball club’s players concluded two years competing together by taking home a championship at the Rogue Valley Volleyball Club Tournament in Medford.

The WaveRiders, who are made up of seniors from Fortuna and Eureka high schools, were a perfect 5-0 on the day, including winning three pool games and two elimination games.

“The girls had such an awesome chemistry on the court all day,” said head coach Zane Easley, who is retiring after 30 years of coaching volleyball. “I have never heard so many positive comments by coaches and players from other teams throughout the day both on our skills and our sportsmanship.”

The championship came one week after the WaveRiders placed second at a 19-team tournament in Redding and capped a successful ending for the local team.

“This was our last game as an AAU travel team,” the coach added. “All of the players now move on to their respective graduations and then college for all of them. At least two of the players plan on playing volleyball in college.”

The 18U roster included Sarah Keating, Khalil Lodes, Jayden Rollins-Edgmon, Anna Stacy, Anisha Recheluul, Natalie Rogers and Gabby Crosswhite, the latter of whom made a welcome return after missing the tournament in Redding through injury.

Easley said he will continue to work with some of the players until they head off to college.

The long-time coach described the tournament as “ending on this beautiful note.”
