SOFTBALL ROUNDUP — Fortuna, McKinleyville girls win on the road

The Fortuna Huskies and McKinleyville Panthers both won road games on Thursday, as they continue to build momentum ahead of conference play.

The Huskies traveled to Hoopa and came away with a 15-2 victory, while the Panthers began a two-day road trip down south with a 12-0 win at Piner in five innings.

Fortuna sophomore Isabel Sanchez continued her impressive start to the new season and got the win in the pitcher’s circle, striking out 12 of the 19 Hoopa batters she faced in six innings.

Myra Hayes closed out the game for the visitors, taking over in the seventh and allowing one hit and striking out one.

Sanchez also had a big day at the plate and led a 14-hit team performance.

The sophomore finished with three hits, including a double, and scored three runs.

Senior Ashley Jenks also impressed at the plate and finished 2-for-2 with a hard-hit double, while also driving in five of her team’s runs.

Freshman Evalynn Little also made some noise at the plate and went 2-for-3 with a triple and three RBIs.

With the win, the Huskies improved to 2-0.

The Fortuna girls will play a doubleheader at Fort Bragg on Friday.

At Piner, meanwhile, the Panthers improved to 3-3 on the season with the shutout victory.

The Mack girls exploded for six runs in the top of the second inning to take control and never looked back, adding three more runs in the third and holding the home team scoreless.

McKennah Sargent got the win in the pitcher’s circle.

The standout sophomore allowed just one hit and one walk in four innings and had seven strikeouts.

Mashell Stumpf threw the final inning and allowed one walk while striking out three.

At the plate, Bailee Box, Leah Circe and Callyn McCullough led a nine-hit team performance with a pair of hits apiece.

McCullough finished 2-for-3 with an RBI, while Circe was 2-for-3 with an RBI and Box was 2-for-4 with a RBI.

Stumpf also made some noise at the plate and finished 1-for-4 with a double and a pair of RBIs.

Sargent also had a double and two RBIs, and Hannah McCullough finished 1-for-3 with an RBI.

The Panthers will conclude their two-game road trip with a game at Tamalpais on Friday.
