Huskies top the Warriors in their season opener in softball

It’s been a challenging preseason for many of the local baseball and softball teams, with a lack of outdoor practice for most of the H-DNL schools because of the weather.

But on Thursday, the Fortuna girls got to play their season opener, and they comfortably defeated Hoopa 20-4 in five innings to go to 1-0.

The loss was the second of the young season for the Warriors, who dropped to 0-2, with both of their losses coming against Big 5 teams.

Pitcher Isabella Sanchez got the new campaign off to an impressive start and posted the win in the circle.

Sanchez pitched all five innings and struck out nine while allowing two walks and giving up four earned runs.

She got plenty of help from her offense and defense, the latter of which played errorless ball.

The Fortuna bats accounted for 18 base hits in the win, with seven different players hitting successfully.

Freshman outfielder Evelyn Little led the way at the plate and finished 3-for-3 with three RBIs.

Sanchez, Ashley Jenks, Myra Hayes and Faith Helms all had two hits in the win, while Olivia Hayes had a double with two RBIs and Hailey Thompson had a triple and two RBIs.

No final statistics were immediately available for Hoopa.

The Warriors fared better in the JV game and won 19-7 in five innings.
