Change of venue announced for big NorCal championship game

Ray Hamill/HumboldtSports.com – St. Bernard’s Samantha Sundberg, left, and Arcata’s Mayleah Jackson will face off at College of the Redwoods on Wednesday night.

By Ray Hamill — With the excitement building ahead of Wednesday’s big all-local NorCal Division-4 championship game in girls basketball, it was announced on Tuesday morning that the game has switched venues.

Top seed St. Bernard’s will play H-DNL rivals and No. 2 seed Arcata, with tip off set for 7 p.m.

However, the game will now take place at College of the Redwoods instead of at St. Bernard’s in order to accommodate more local fans.

“We’re really excited and looking forward to the big game on Wednesday night,” St. Bernard’s head coach Matt Tomlin said. “And we hope everyone shows up. It’s going to be a great celebration of H-DN basketball.”

The big showdown will be the first-ever NorCal final between two local teams, and the winning team will become just the second-ever H-DNL squad to qualify for a true state championship game in basketball, following in the footsteps of the Hoopa boys in 2000.

The SB girls, who are the top seeds in the bracket, won their semifinal on Monday night defeating Foothill 49-42 at St. Bernard’s.

The Arcata girls, who are seeded No. 2, comfortably defeated Notre Dame in their semifinal on Saturday night by a score of 47-24.

The two teams have already played each other twice this season, with the Crusaders winning both games, although each was close.

The SB girls won the first game 49-41 at St. Bernard’s in late January and followed that with a come-from-behind 52-47 win in the Dick Niclai tournament semifinals two weeks later at CR.

    • only if qualified… I saw a picture with a female official… she had a forearm tattoo… it stood out like a red boil pimple… self-adornment by sports officials… she’s qualified these days…

of course, depends on the tattoo… not all tats are liberal…

  1. let’s cross fingers that a ref on the crew does not play religion or racism in calling a game… NFHS officiating is not as good, as it once used to be better… insiders with non-profit ref organizations, schools and leagues are thoroughly disrupting better officiating…pushing away better people with better officiating skills…🤷‍♂️
