There’s something special about this year’s College of the Redwoods men’s basketball team, which continues its remarkable Cinderella run.

On Saturday night, the Corsairs won a playoff game on the road against a higher seed for the second time in four days to keep their hopes of qualifying for the Elite Eight state tournament alive.

After being denied a fourth straight Golden Valley Conference championship this winter, the Corsairs didn’t know if they would even make the playoffs.

But they snuck in, earning the No. 22 seed in the 24-team NorCal bracket.

Now they’ve qualified for the Sweet 16 in California, continuing their remarkable playoff push with an 86-78 victory at No. 6 seed Chabot on Saturday night.

The win sets up a showdown at No. 3 College of the Sequioas next Saturday, and if the Corsairs continue to play they way they have been there’s every reason to believe they can keep it going.

On Saturday, they led wire to wire in a showdown that really wasn’t as close as the final score would suggest.

It was their fifth straight win and their eighth in nine games, as this year’s team appears to be playing its best ball of the season at the right time.

No final stats were immediately available, but there’s more to come on their big win.

College of the Sequoias also took care of business on Saturday, beating Santa Rosa 77-56.

The Corsairs are the lowest remaining seed in either the NorCal or SoCal brackets.
