St. Bernard’s began the new baseball season at the Foothill Tournament on Tuesday, falling 3-2 to Las Plumas.
Sophomore Michael Manzi was outstanding on the mound in what head coach Matt Tomlin described as a “tough luck loss.”
Manzi, who was an all-league selection as a freshman, struck out 10 batters in 5.2 innings and had no walks.
He allowed just one earned run.
Junior Tyler Maples, who also is a returning all-league selection for the team, had an RBI double, while teammate TC Rinker added an RBI single.
Quentin Ikeya made the defensive play of the game with a diving catch in center field.
The Crusaders, who are 0-1, will play a pair of tournament games on Wednesday, facing off against Orland at 10 a.m. and against Foothill at 3 p.m.
Las Plumas improved to 2-0.
