By Ray Hamill — Saturday’s college basketball game at College of the Redwoods has been moved forward to 1 p.m.

The CR men will host Feather River in a key showdown as they begin the second half of conference play.

The game was originally scheduled for 3 p.m., but has been moved forward because there will be no women’s game.

Feather River is not fielding a women’s team this year.

On the men’s side, the Golden Valley Conference is shaping up to one of the most competitive in years.

Three of the six teams are within one win of each other at the top of the standings.

And with half of the schedule still remaining, the race for the championship appears wide open.

The Corsairs, who have won two straight games, are now 3-2 in GVC play and sit third in the standings.

Siskiyous leads the way with a 4-1 record, followed by Feather River, which is 3-1 heading into a Wednesday night showdown against Shasta.

Butte and Lassen are each 2-3, while Shasta remains winless at 0-4.

The CR players should be fired up for Saturday’s big showdown after losing 82-70 at Feather River 11 days ago.

The CR offense has been peaking at the right time, with the team’s three highest points totals of the season coming in their last six games, including a season-best 95 points in a 21-point win at Shasta on Saturday.

CR is 13-10 on the season and the only team in the GVC with an overall winning record.

The CR women, who are in the midst of an 11-day break from games, will return to action at Siskiyous on Feb. 8.

The Corsairs are 3-1 in the GVC and second in the standings halfway through the conference schedule, trailing only leaders Butte (4-0).

CR is two wins ahead of third placed Siskiyous.
