By Ray Hamill — Saturday’s loss wasn’t all bad news for the St. Bernard’s Crusaders.
The SB girls saw their 10-game winning streak end with their first loss of 2024, falling to McKinleyville 52-50 in an exciting and well-played basketball game at St. Bernard’s.
However, in the third quarter junior standout Laila Florvilus reached a memorable milestone with her 1,000th career point for the Crusaders.
Remarkably, Florvilus has achieved this in just her junior season.
And head coach Matt Tomlin, who has said he believes Florvilus is the best player in the H-DNL, praised the achievement.
“Congratulations to Laila Florvilus, who joined the exclusive 1,000-point club today,” he said afterwards. “We are very proud of her.”
Florvilus finished with a game-high 22 points in the loss, which was the first for the St. Bernard’s girls since falling to Smith County in New Orleans on Dec. 29.
Florvilus, who is the reigning co-MVP of the Little 4 along with teammate Madelyn Shanahan, is playing at MVP level once again this season.
The junior standout is averaging 18.5 points a game.
Florvilus and the Crusaders will try to get back to winning ways when they host Hoopa in a Little 4 showdown on Tuesday.
The SB girls have already clinched at least a share of the conference championship and can win it outright with a victory in either of their final two Little 4 games.
