Cal Poly Humboldt men get breakthrough win vs. Sonoma State

The Cal Poly Humboldt men’s basketball team got its first conference win on Thursday night, beating Sonoma State 66-64 at Lumberjack Arena.

The Humboldt women’s team also beat Sonoma, 63-51.

The victory for the men lifts the Jacks to 1-11 in the California Collegiate Athletic Association and 4-13 overall.

It ended a seven-game losing streak.

Rob Diaz III scored a game-high 14 points in the win, while teammate Sage Wayans added 12 points.

Sonoma dropped to 5-7 in conference and 9-9 overall.

The Humboldt women, meanwhile, were led by Sara Ahmadpour, who finished with a team-high 15 points, while teammate Emilia Long added 13 points and Kacie Sloper scored 10 points off the bench.

With the win, the Jacks improved to 6-6 in the CCAA and 8-8 overall, while Sonoma dropped to 6-6 and 11-8.

The Humboldt women are tied with Sonoma, Cal State Los Angeles and Cal State Dominguez Hills for fifth in the conference standings, just two wins out of second.

Both Humboldt teams will be back in action at Lumberjack Arena on Saturday night when they host Cal State San Marcos.

The women tip off at 5:30 p.m., followed by the men at 7:30.
