By Ray Hamill — The new Jay Willard Gymnasium will host a first Logger Classic in boys basketball, one of three local tournaments scheduled for this week.
The 2023 Logger Classic will tip off on Thursday and the six-team event will feature three H-DNL teams, with McKinleyville and St. Bernard’s joining the hosts.
Both St. Bernard’s and Eureka will play on opening night.
The Crusaders will get the party started against Shasta at 4:30 p.m., followed by a non-tournament showdown between McKinleyville and Richmond at 6 p.m. and the Loggers and Upper Lake in a tournament showdown at 7:30 p.m.
The tournament continues on Friday, with Mack playing the winner of the SB/Shasta game at 6 p.m. and Richmond playing the winner of the Eureka/Upper Lake game at 7:30 p.m.
The two losing teams from day one will face off on Friday at 4:30 p.m.
Saturday’s championship game is set for 2:30 p.m.
Down in Miranda, meanwhile, the South Fork Cubs will host their annual Gene Cotter Memorial Tournament in boys and girls basketball.
The four-day event began on Wednesday afternoon and runs through Saturday and will feature six teams split into two pools in each of the boys and girls brackets.
South Fork will be joined by Hoopa, Round Valley, Point Arena, Anderson Valley and Averroes (Fremont) in the boys tournament, with Hoopa, Mendocino, Anderson Valley, Round Valley and Point Arena joining the Cubs in the girls tournament.
The Hoopa boys play Averroes on Thursday at 3:30 p.m., followed by South Fork and Point Arena at 6:30 p.m.
In girls action on Thursday, Hoopa plays Point Arena at 2 p.m., followed by Mendocino and Anderson Valley at 5 p.m.
There will be four more games on Friday, with six games on Saturday, starting at 9:30 a.m.
The girls championship game will be played 3:30 p.m. on Saturday, followed by the boys final at 5 p.m.


The Hoopa boys will compete at the Gene Cotter Memorial Tournament this week.
