Cubs, Warriors both win openers at Gene Cotter Memorial Tourney

The South Fork boys tipped off the Gene Cotter Memorial Tournament with a comfortable 64-34 win over Round Valley in boys basketball in Miranda on Wednesday.

Also in tournament action on Wednesday, the Hoopa boys won their third straight game, beating Anderson Valley 68-41.

Tommy Rotbergs paced the host school with 14 points in the win, while teammate Shevy Bero-Vanmeter added 12 points.

Ruben Lopez also had 10 points in the win, as the Cubs enjoyed balanced scoring and had “great energy off the bench,” according to head coach Taylor Morrow.

With the win, the Cubs improved to 7-2 on the season.

The Warriors also enjoyed balanced scoring in their win, as they improved to 3-5 on the season, and they have quickly put a five-game losing streak behind them.

Lyle McKinnon scored a team-high 15 points in the victory and was one of four Hoopa players to finish in double digits in scoring.

Impressive sophomore Carlos Anzora finished with 14 points, as did senior Stephen Hatter, while Brandon Romero added 11 points and Sequoia Valentine chipped in eight points.

Tournament action continues on Thursday, with Hoopa playing Averroes out of Fremont at 3:30 p.m. and South Fork playing Point Arena at 6:30 p.m.

The four-day tournament continues through Saturday.
