Juniors shine as South Fork boys win tournament opener

A pair of South Fork juniors had a good night in the opening game of the Redwood Empire Invitational Basketball Tournament at Healdsburg on Thursday, as the Cubs beat the host school 42-30.

Trevor Hunt scored 14 points in the win, many of them coming off assists from fellow junior Wesley Way, who set up his teammate for some open layups.

The Cubs came out ready to play and opened up a 17-9 first-quarter lead on their way to their sixth victory in six games this season.

The ever-consistent Tommy Rotbergs scored a team-but 19 points in the win in what was a physical showdown.

“It was an extremely physical game, but we weathered the storm and won,” head coach Taylor Morrow said.

Shevy Bero-Vanmeter also as instrumental in the win while guarding Healdsburg’s best player and keeping him in check for much of the game.

“We did a great job handling the physical game and hostile home crowd,” Morrow added.

A victory over a Division-4 school was another impressive one for the Division-6 Cubs.

South Fork is the top-ranked D-6 boys team in the North Coast Section, according to MaxPreps, and No. 3 in the state.

The Cubs continue tournament play against San Domenico on Friday night.
