Laurel Tree wins inaugural Coast League championship

The inaugural Coast League cross country season wrapped up last week with just one point separating the top two teams in the league championship meet.

Six different charter and alternative schools competed at College of the Redwoods on Thursday, and it Laurel Tree that edged out Alder Grove for the team win.

Barely.

Alder Grove had the top two finishers on the day, but Laurel Tree’s depth came through and the latter secured the team win by the narrowest of margins, 14 to 15.

Alder Grove’s Isaac Lochwood was first across the finish line in a time of 11 minutes, 44.23 seconds, with teammate Ocean Goodrich second in a time of 11:57.79.

Laurel Tree’s Micah Cristian (12:39.06), Academy of the Redwoods’ Rowan Estlin (13:39.86) and Laurel Tree’s Sirius Vanderlinden (13:57.74) rounded out the top five.

Levi Scaglione and Flynt Ryno Moore each also had top-eight finishes for Laurel Tree to help secure the team championship and the inaugural “Bragging Rights” plaque, which will stay at the school for the next year.

Redwood Coast Montessori, Northern United Charter School and Eureka Community School rounded out the six-team field.

Frank Berns led Redwood Coast Montessori in seventh.
