The South Fork Cubs are getting hot at the right time.

On Friday night, the Cubs won their third straight game, defeating Elsie Allen 56-0 in South Fork, while improving to 3-1 in league play and 3-5 on the season.

In those three wins, the Cubs have outscored their opponents by a combined 154-14.

“Things are clicking,” head coach Karl Terrell said. “The opponents aren’t as good as what we saw earlier in the season, but it still feels good to be executing.”

Several players stood out in Friday’s win, including Wesley Way who had a punt return for a touchdown for the second straight week.

Defensively, the Cubs tackled well, with Justin Freitas setting the tone.

“Justin Freitas has been just dominant on defense the last three weeks,” Terrell said. “He’s making tackles, forcing issues, creating fumbles.”

Way, Freitas and John Stafslien all ran the ball well, as did quarterback Shevy Bero-Vanmeter, who also threw the ball effectively and has seen his game mature this season.

According to Terrell, “Shevy and me are on the same page,” and they see the game similarly.

Senior lineman Lucas Genolio also had a good game on both sides of the ball.

The Cubs will now turn their attention to next Saturday’s season finale against Branson in Miranda in a game that has been moved forward to 1 p.m.

A victory for the Cubs will secure second place in the North Central League II and a likely No. 2 seed for the upcoming North Coast Section playoffs.
