Arcata freshman Bella DeCarli got her third league win of the season in Wednesday’s final H-DNL regular-season girls cross country race at Arcata.
DeCarli crossed the finish line at the three-mile event in a time of 20 minutes, 55 seconds, which was 45 seconds faster than anyone else.
The victory capped a big week for the flying freshman, who also placed second at the weekend Yoshanny Invitational in Ukiah.
Senior teammate Nicole Nozawa placed second on Wednesday in a time of 21:40, followed by Hoopa’s Julia Jackson in third in a time of 21:47.
Fortuna’s Brida Lester (21:56) and Arcata’s Josephine Maguire (22:04) rounded out the top five.
Eureka senior Sequoia Ashby, who won three of the previous five league races, sat out this week.
Fortuna’s Gabby Crosswhite placed sixth, with Arcata’s Sydney Ventuleth, Madison Trieu, Sasha Love and Sonya Chisholm rounding out the top 10.

The league championships will be held at the Arcata Marsh a week from Saturday.

I was there. It was a super exciting finish. Both teammates from both schools (Eureka and Arcata) were sprinting next to Bella DeCarli and Sequoia Ashby. The sprint to the finish was so exciting. We were all jumping up and down… I’m excited to see the championships. It seems as though there will be an exciting finish once again as the times with Sequoia and Bella are extremely close.
