Junior Reece Thompson led the way for a dominating Arcata boys team at this week’s H-DNL cross country races in Fortuna.

Thompson got his first career league win and beat the field by almost half a minute, crossing the finish line in a time of 18 minutes, 11 seconds.

The Tigers had six of the top eight runners to comfortably take the team win over Eureka.

With dominating McKinleyville senior Damian Dinan sitting this one out, a remarkable three freshmen placed in the top five and there were no seniors in the top six.

Eureka junior Everett Docherty placed second in a time of 18:37, followed by freshmen Eoin McGoldrick of Arcata (18:39), Ryder Bullman of Eureka (18:40) and Evan Poston of Arcata (19:10).

Arcata’s Levi Browne, Nathan Whitney and Kai Frimodig placed sixth through eighth, with Eureka’s James Coleman and Arcata’s Ocean Walker rounding out the top 10.

As a team, the Tigers scored 22 points followed by Eureka with 39.

Hoopa was a distant third with 108 points, edging McKinleyville (111) and Fortuna (115) in a tight battle for a top-three finish.
