The Cal Poly Humboldt cross country teams enjoyed successful season debuts at the annual Jim Hunt Humboldt Invitational, which the Jacks hosted at Beau Pre Golf Club in McKinleyville on Saturday.

The Jacks hosted runners from Southern Oregon University, Oregon Tech, San Francisco State and College of the Redwoods, as well as some unattached entries.

Humboldt took the team win in the men’s event with 34 points, followed by Southern Oregon — which is the No. 12 ranked NAIA team in the nation — with 37 points, Oregon Tech (76), and San Francisco State (85).

Former Cal Poly Humboldt and CR runner Nicholas Brichta, who was competing as an unattached runner, won the men’s 8K race with a time of 25 minutes, 07.1 seconds, followed by Humboldt’s Sebastian Vaisset-Fauvel in second with a PR of 25:25.5.

Humboldt sophomores Reese Sion took the win in an exciting women’s 6K race in a time of 22:23.3.

Sion trailed going into the final 100 meters but dug deep to pass Alejandra Lopez of Southern Oregon to take the win by just one-tenth of a second.

Cal Poly Humboldt finished second as a team behind Southern Oregon, the No. 9 NAIA team in the nation.

Southern Oregon scored 30 points with the Jacks scoring 51.
