By Ray Hamill — All nine local high school varsity teams will be in action this weekend, along with seven of the eight JV teams and College of the Redwoods.

And that includes three all-local varsity showdowns

The busy weekend of action gets under way on Friday night, when the impressive Fortuna Huskies travel to play the Panthers in McKinleyville at 7:30 p.m.

The game will be broadcast live on MIX 91.5 FM with the pregame show starting at 7:15.

The Huskies are 2-0 and will be looking to continue their unbeaten start to the new season against a Panthers team that had just 13 players suit up in a season-opening loss to Kelseyville two weeks ago.

McKinleyville (0-1) had a bye this past weekend.

Also on Friday, St. Bernard’s will hit the road for the second straight week, playing at Biggs High School, which is near Yuba City.

The Crusaders also are 2-0 and are scheduled to kick off at 7 p.m.

The Eureka Loggers, meanwhile, will be hoping to put a disappointing start to the season behind them when they travel to play Enterprise, also on Friday at 7:30 p.m.

The Loggers, who are opening the season with three straight road games, dropped their opener against Arcata two weeks ago and fell 56-7 at Analy last week.

The action continues on Saturday, with five more varsity teams in action, including a pair of all-local games.

On Saturday afternoon, the South Fork Cubs play at Ferndale at 2 p.m.

The Cubs are 0-2, having lost games against Fort Bragg and Hoopa, the latter coming after two overtime periods, while the Cats have looked impressive on their way to a 1-1 record, barely losing their opener to Fall River in overtime and then rallying from a 14-point deficit to beat Fort Bragg on the road 28-20.

The Del Norte Warriors also will be in action on Saturday night when they play their home opener against South Medford at 6 p.m.

That game will be broadcast live on KPOD 97.9 FM and on DelNorteSports.com.

The Warriors are 1-1 after a big win at Lower Lake two weeks and a 20-6 loss at Grants Pass this past weekend in a game that got away from them late.

And rounding out the varsity action, on Saturday night the Arcata Tigers will look to put a disappointing showing against Fortuna last weekend behind them when they host Hoopa in the first of three games between the two schools this fall.

Both teams are 1-1 and kickoff is set for 7 p.m. at McKinleyville High, where the Tigers host their games.

The Corsairs will play at San Jose on Saturday.

Other teams in action

Seven of the eight JV teams will also be in action this weekend, although there is one change to the schedule.

The Hoopa JVs, who are 0-1, will play at Ferndale before Saturday’s varsity game instead of against Arcata on Saturday night.

On Friday night, the Fortuna JVs will play at Mack before the varsity game, as will the SB JVs at Biggs and the Eureka JVs at Enterprise.

On Saturday, the Del Norte JVs will play South Medford.

In local college football, College of the Redwoods will travel this weekend, playing at San Jose on Saturday at 1 p.m.

The Corsairs are 1-0 after a 21-7 win over Merced College this past weekend.

San Jose will be playing its season opener.

Hoopa will play Arcata at McKinleyville High on Saturday night.
