The Fortuna boys beat Arcata 1-0 in the championship game at the McKinleyville Invitational Soccer Tournament on Saturday.

Jesus Vielma scored the only goal of the game, as the Huskies won for the fourth time in four tournament games and improved to 8-1 on the season.

“Both teams looked good,” Fortuna head coach Daniel Holmes said. “Arcata settled in and kept it tight.”

The Huskies opened tournament with a 1-0 win over Del Norte on Friday afternoon and also beat Fort Bragg (2-1) and Eureka (3-1).

Aristeo Hererra, Adrian Magana, Oliver Cortes and Chris Marquez all played well at the tournament for a Fortuna team whose only loss this year came in their season opener against defending North Coast Section champion Head-Royce.

Since then the Huskies have gotten the better of all four of their Big 5 rivals by a combined score of 9-1, including three shutout victories.

The Arcata boys, meanwhile, defeated Eureka (3-2) and Willits (1-0) on Friday, before advancing to the championship game.

Eureka finished tournament play 2-2.

After falling to the Tigers in their opening game on Friday afternoon, the Loggers showcased their offensive power in a 7-0 win over Willits later in the day.

They opened Saturday with a 3-1 loss to Fortuna before closing out tournament play with a 1-0 win over McKinleyville.

  1. Ranking these teams thus far.

    1) Fortuna
    3) Arcata
    3) Fort Bragg
    4) Del Norte
    5) Eureka
    6) McKinleyville
    7) Willits
    8) Summit Mt. Tamalpais (No Show?)

[What ever happened to the uniforms… Fortuna and Arcata used to have a bit brighter colors (Arcata was looking sharp back in the day like the Dutch), while EHS had some cool looks too…🤷‍♂️]

Would it not be the right thing to do for the student athletes of each LEAGUE MEMBER HIGH SCHOOL soccer program to design their uniform look according to NFHS rules… in a way that represents their particular school mascot, it’s colors that flash style… embodiment for years to come…

… uniforms need replaced after some time, next re-up… let soccer students athletes design them… and embroid the H-DNL Logo (onto all league team jerseys) with CIF-NCS embroidered underneath.
