FOOTBALL ROUNDUP — Two Big 4 teams setting the early standard

By Ray Hamill — We’re now two weeks into the 2023 high school football season and so far two Big 4 teams are setting the standard for the H-DNL.

The Fortuna Huskies and St. Bernard’s Crusaders cruised to impressive wins on Friday night, as the league rivals both improved to 2-0.

St. Bernard’s traveled to Willits and came away with a 33-10 victory, with the Crusaders defense leading the way and not allowing a touchdown all night.

SB running back Wyatt Simoni continued his outstanding start to the new season with four rushing touchdowns in the win.

At Fortuna, meanwhile, the Huskies also enjoyed a second straight win to start the season, shutting out Arcata 34-0.

The Huskies scored on four of their five first-half possessions to end the game as a contest before halftime.

Eight of the nine H-DNL varsity teams were in action on Friday night, with McKinleyville on a bye this week.

The Ferndale Wildcats had one of the most impressive wins of the night, rallying from a 20-6 halftime deficit to pull out a victory at Fort Bragg.

The Cats scored 22 unanswered points and won 28-20.

The Del Norte Warriors, meanwhile, lost in Oregon.

The defending Big 4 champs matched Grants Pass stride for stride for much of the night but gave up two late touchdowns, including a pick six.

  1. Why no comments about the outstanding performance of the Eureka Loggers? Maybe they can beat Hayfork. Seriously, what a sad thing to witness a once outstanding program go down the drain.
