By Ray Hamill — The Arcata Tigers and Fortuna Huskies both won their opening games at the McKinleyville Invitational Soccer Tournament early Friday afternoon.
Both games were decided by the narrowest of margins, with the Tigers edging Eureka 3-2 and the Huskies defeating Del Norte 1-0.
As usual, the Arcata and Eureka showdown was an exciting one and went right down the wire.
Izaiah Grosveld was involved in all three Arcata goals, scoring the first off a Daniel Hernandez assist and then assisting on the other two.
Kieren Wolfe and Hernandez each also scored for Arcata.
Trenton Gerber and Will Mooney both scored for Eureka, the latter coming in the dying minutes to pull the Loggers within one and setting up an exciting finish.
The win was the second straight for the Tigers, who improved to 2-2 on the young season.
The Loggers dropped to 1-4, but they have been competitive in all five of their games.
The Huskies, meanwhile, barely edged the Warriors, with a successful second-half penalty kick the only thing separating the two sides.
Aristeo Herrera converted from the spot for Fortuna.
The two-day tournament features eight teams and will continue later on Friday afternoon, with games at 3 and 6 p.m..
