It was a good day for local college soccer teams on Thursday, with road victories for both the Cal Poly Humboldt and College of the Redwoods men’s teams.
Former Fortuna Husky Braiden Barsanti assisted on a Roman Barnes goal for the Corsairs, who won 1-0 at Merritt College.
The goal was the second for Barnes in the opening two games of the season.
The CR men are now 1-1 and will try to carry the momentum from Thursday’s win into a Friday showdown at Gavilan.
Kickoff is set for noon.
The Lumberjacks, meanwhile, won 3-0 at Academy of Art in San Francisco, a team they lost to a year ago.
Cole Falco and Ethan Conaty both scored in the win, with an Academy of Art own goal rounding out the scoring.
Adrian Gallardo recorded the clean sheet between the posts for the Jacks.
The game was the season opener for the 1-0 Jacks.
“It is always great to start the season with a win and we checked a lot of positive boxes today,” longtime head coach Fred Jungemann said. “We had some very good individual performances, and did a great job of keeping our composure against a strong and physical team.
“Overall, it was exactly the performance we were hoping to start the season with.”
The Jacks play at Dominican on Saturday at 11 a.m.
The Cal Poly Humboldt women, meanwhile, are also 1-0 after a 1-0 win at Central Washington on Thursday.
Brooke Weese scored the only goal of the game off an assist by teammate Annie Hoffman.
