VIDEO HIGHLIGHTS — Huskies eyeing more success in 2023

By Ray Hamill — The Fortuna Huskies are not done yet.

After clinching the school’s first Big 5 championship in baseball since 1975 a week ago, they added a first-ever Charlie Lakin Tournament trophy on Friday night, and now they’ll try to complete an historic treble of championships in the North Coast Section playoffs.

And there’s every reason to believe this group can do it.

The have a core group of experienced seniors and they play with a passion for first-year head coach Max Betts.

On Saturday, the Fortuna boys got a big boost for the postseason when they received the No. 1 seed in the Division-4 bracket, and they are guaranteed to play at home for as long as they keep going in the 16-team bracket.

The Huskies open against No. 16 St. Helena at Newburg Park on Wednesday night at 7 p.m., and there’s sure to be plenty of excitement around the Friendly City in the build up to the game.

There was certainly plenty of excitement after they won the Lakin tourney championship in dramatic circumstances at the Arcata Ball Park, capping three very entertaining nights of tournament action with a 9-7 win over the Arcata Tigers.

(The ball park, as always, looked great for the first games there this year, as does the new scoreboard.)
