Fresh off his league championship last month, St. Bernard’s Esteban Cervantes led the H-DN at Monday’s North Coast Section Division-II Golf Championships.
Nine H-DN golfers traveled to Petaluma to compete in the postseason tournament, with Cervantes shooting a 79 and coming within two strokes of qualifying for next week’s Division-I tournament.
The tournament was held at Rooster Run Golf Course and the top 18 golfers all advanced to the D-I tournament.
Four of the H-DN contingent shot in the 80s, including Arcata’s Mason Alway, who was second in league play this year after finishing just two strokes back of Cervantes in the final season standings.
Alway shot an 83 in Petaluma, followed by St. Bernard’s Jack Kramer with an 84 and Del Norte’s Kai Russell with a round of 87.
McKinleyville’s Jake Gardner also qualified for the postseason event and shot a 93 to cap his impressive season as the Panthers’ top golfer.
Likewise with South Fork’s Trevor Hunt, who was the Cub’s best golfer all season and shot a 98.
League champs Eureka did jot make the trip after unexpectedly being bumped up to the Division-I championships.
We’ll have more on the Loggers and their big season later in the week.
Because of that, the Arcata Tigers qualified as a team and had five golfers make the trip.
In addition to Alway, Beck Pedersen shot a 95, Cameron Leach a 96, Zayne Morris-Slattery a 99 and Lucas Wimberly a 101.
Ryan Herbst of Branson placed first on Monday with a round of 69.
The Division-I tournament will take place at the Foxtail Golf Course North in Rohnert Park.
