The Arcata Tigers got their first win of the season at Fortuna on Wednesday, holding off a late rally for a 9-8 victory over the host Huskies.

The visitors scored four runs on two outs in the pivotal sixth inning and that proved to be just enough as they improved to 1-10 on the season and 1-3 in the Big 5.

“It was just a great team win,” Arcata head coach Steve Sarchett said. “We held our composure at the end, and our team gained a lot of experience today.”

Lexi Alto led the way at the plate and was 3-for-4 with a double and three RBIs, while teammates Sagen Sarchett, Lucia Hernandez and Josie Cunningham each had two hits and Taylor Appy had a big two-RBI hit.

Morgan Ford got the win in the circle and “pitched really well,” according to her coach, while inducing 10 groundout balls to cut short several Fortuna rallies.

Kylee Fennell and Libby Johnston each continued to impress for the Huskies and both finished the game 3-for-4 at the plate.

Kadence Mace also had a big day for the home team and was 2-for-4, while Fennell, Zoe Dewberry, Mariah Smith, Myra Hayes and Faith Helms each had RBI singles.

With the loss, the Huskies dropped to 6-7 on the season and 0-7 in the Big 5.

The two teams will conclude a three-game series with a doubleheader at Arcata on Saturday.
