Garcia and Starkey enjoy impressive debuts for Del Norte

File photo – The Del Norte Warriors have won four straight games.

A senior and a freshman got their first varsity starts for Del Norte on Wednesday, and both played a big role as the Warriors continued their impressive start to the new season.

Freshman Kanyon Starkey got the start on the hill and posted his first-ever victory, allowing just two hits in four innings in an 11-1 win over Gold Beach in Crescent City.

The impressive Starkey did not allow any earned runs, while striking out four and walking two.

He got plenty of help from a Del Norte offense that continues to roll, as the Warriors won their fourth straight game to go to 4-1.

Senior outfielder Damian Garcia got his first varsity start and his first-ever varsity base hit, finishing 1-for-3.

“Damian Garcia is the epitome of a good teammate and he’s a guy who works hard every day in practice,” head coach Brandon Coborn said. “And he earned that today.”

The consistent Ethan Thomas also continued to impress in the win, finishing 2-for-4 with a double, an RBI and a stolen base, as did catcher Cooper Maxwell, who finished 1-for-2 with a triple and an RBI.

Preston Daniels also was instrumental in the win and finished 2-for-2 with a double and an RBI.

“I felt real good about how we played today,” Coborn said. “The exciting part about today is that some of the other guys stepped up.”

Brody Mattz pitched the final inning to close out the win, striking out two and walking one.

Next up, the Warriors will host South Fork on Tuesday and then head to Chico for a big three-game road trip the following weekend before opening league play.
