Alway leads the Tigers to victory in round two of H-DN golf

Arcata’s Mason Alway led the field in the second round of H-DN boys golf at Baywood Golf and Country Club on Monday.

Alway shot a round of 74 for a three-stroke victory and took over the lead in the individual season standings.

His victory also paved the way for a Tigers team win, with the Arcata boys edging Eureka by just two strokes, 344-346.

The St. Bernard’s Crusaders had the third best team round of the day (370), followed by McKinleyville in fourth (396) and Fortuna in fifth (417).

Through two rounds, the Loggers hold a 16-point advantage in the team season standings.

Individually, St. Bernard’s Esteban Cervantes continued his impressive start to the new season with the second best round of the day.

Cervantes followed his league-best round of 78 in the season opener at Beau Pre with a round of 77 on Monday.

The Crusaders standout is the only H-DN golfer to shot in the 70s in each of the first two rounds.

Eureka’s Talon Vigil, the defending league champion, pushed Cervantes all the way, finishing just one stroke back with a round of 78.

Cervantes’ teammate Jack Kramer enjoyed one of the most impressive rounds of the day.

The SB golfer shot an 83 to place fourth just weeks after breaking his arm at the North Coast Section wrestling championships.

According to head coach Brian Dunlap, Kramer just wanted to be out there with his teammates and essentially played with just one arm.

Arcata’s Beck Pederson had the fifth-best round of the day with an 85, with Eureka’s Julian Goodman (88) and Jerome Lyon (89) the only other two golfers to shoot under 90.

Arcata’s Cameron Leach (91), Lucas Wimberly (94) and Zayne Morris-Slattery (95) each also had a good day in the team victory, as did Andrew Stewart (91) and Nate Hill (94) for the Loggers.

Joshua Barsanti led the way for the McKinleyville boys with a round of 96, while teammate Jake Garnder shot a 97.

Kai Russell led Del Norte with a round of 94 and tied South Fork’s Trevor Hunt, who led the way for the Cubs.

Dawson McWhorter led Fortuna with a 99, tying St. Bernard’s Owen Shanahan.

Round three of league competition will take place at the Eureka Municipal Golf Course on Thursday.
