Tigers lead the field at five-team Humboldt Twilight Relays

Photos by Ray Hamill/HumboldtSports.com – Arcata’s Ai-Lan McGoldrick placed first in the girls mile at the Redwood Bowl on Wednesday.

The Arcata boys and girls track and field team comfortably outpaced the field at the season-opening Humboldt Twilight Relays at the Redwood Bowl on Wednesday.

The Tigers scored a combined 212.5 points to take the win at the five-team event, with Eureka scoring 181 points to place second.

A tight race for third saw the McKinleyville Panthers edge out the Fortuna Huskies, 103 to 102.5, with St. Bernard’s rounding out the field in fifth with 61 team points.

Among the individual standouts, Arcata’s Sydney Hasselquist was a three-time winner on the day, placing first in the 100 meters and long jump and teaming up with Alauna Thompson, Ai-Lan McGoldrick and Soquel Macdonald to lead the field in the girls distance relay.

McGoldrick also placed first in the girls mile, and was followed by teammates Macdonald and Thompson to give the Tigers the top three finishers in the event.

Arcata’s Quincy Collins also placed first in the high jump, ahead of teammate Josie Maguire in second, while Eureka’s Sophie Grimmett, Emily Pesch, Ginny Brooks and Aniah Gaither placed first in the girls 800 sprint medley.

Brooks, who will compete for Cal Poly Humboldt next year, also placed second in the long jump, followed in third by St. Bernard’s Madelyn Shanahan, who also won the discus, followed by Fortuna’s Lonna Torrez in second and McKinleyville’s Kalyssa Claros in third.

Claros fared better in the shot put, where she placed first ahead of Torrez in second and Gaither in third.

Fortuna’s Allie Cox placed second in the 100 meters, followed by St. Bernard’s Laila Florvilus in third.

BOYS RESULTS

In the boys 100 meters, meanwhile, St. Bernard’s Isaiah Herbst took first, followed by Eureka’s Michael Been in second and Arcata’s Oscar Carlson in third, while McKinleyville’s Jace Thomson was first across the line in the boys mile, followed by Eureka’s Sean Morris in second and Arcata’s Ocean Walker in third.

The Eureka A team of Hans Chalmers, Joe Morris, Caleb Bayless and Jackson Burger took first in the 4x200m relay, with Chalmers also placing first in the high jump, followed by Arcata’s Eric Jackson in second and his teammate Luke Moxon in third.

Derek Ray also was a double winner for McKinleyville, taking first place in both the shot put and discus, with Eureka’s Jamin Guilbert second in the shot put, followed by teammate Joseph Gonzales in third.

Gonzales also placed second in the discus, with Gilbert third.

In the boys long jump, St. Bernard’s Carl Nunes placed first, followed by Moxon in second and Chalmers in third.

The Eureka A team of Everett Docherty, Joe Morris, Ashton Plessinger and Daniel Shaver placed first in the boys distance medley, while the Eureka A team of Elijah Griffin, Joe Morris, Gonzalez and Chalmers was first in the boys 800 sprint medley.

And rounding out a busy stay of action, the Arcata foursome of Nathan Whitney, Levi Browne, McGoldrick and Thompson took first in the mixed 4x800m relay.
