The 2023 H-DN boys golf season got under way at Beau Pre Golf Course on Friday, with St. Bernard’s Esteban Cervantes leading the field.
Cervantes shot a 78 for a two-stroke victory, with Eureka’s Julian Goodman posting the second best round of the day with an 80.
Goodman was one of several Eureka golfers to impress on opening day, as the defending league champs had three golfers in the top five to take the team win.
The Eureka boys shot a 340 as a team, 18 strokes better than Arcata in second.
Arcata’s Mason Alway and Eureka’s Talon Vigil each shot an 83 to tie for third on the day, with Eureka’s Andrew Stewart rounding out the top five with a round of 85.
South Fork’s Trevor Hunt also had a good round and shot an 86 to lead the way for the Cubs, tying Del Norte’s Kai Russell for the sixth best round of the day.
Jake Gardner led the way for McKinleyville with a round of 89, tying Arcata’s Cameron Leach, who also had an 89.
McKinleyville and Fortuna tied for third in the team standings with scores of 397.
Dawson McWhorter paced the Huskies with a round of 95.
The second round of league play, which was scheduled for Monday at Baywood Golf & Country Club, was postponed because of the weather.
