CR men receive first-round bye, will open on Saturday

By Ray Hamill — Fresh off an historic first-ever three-peat of Golden Valley Conference championships, the Corsairs have received the No. 6 seed for the NorCal community college men’s basketball playoffs.

The postseason tournament gets under way this week, but the College of the Redwoods men won’t play until Saturday.

The Corsairs will play either No. 11 Consumnes River or No. 22 West Hills-Lemoore, who face off in the opening round on Wednesday night.

Saturday’s game will be played at CR, with tip off tentatively set for 7 p.m.

Consumnes River is 19-9 on the season, while West Hills-Lemoore is 13-15.

The Corsairs, who were ranked No. 12 in the state for much of the season, set a new program record for most wins in a single season with a record of 25-3.

They won seven straight game to clinch the conference championship, including an 86-81 victory over Feather River in there regular-season finale on Friday.

The third straight conference championship was the first in program history and the first in the GVC since Butte did it back in the late 1970s.
