The strength of girls wrestling in the Humboldt-Del Norte League was on full display on Saturday as seven locals representing four different high schools placed at the North Coast Section Championships.

Competing at Albany High School, St. Bernard’s sophomore Rory Bickmore led the local charge and placed third in her bracket just one week after winning a league title.

The Fortuna Huskies had the strongest showing of all local schools with three girls placing, while the Del Norte Warriors had two.

Senior Lindsay Bibby and junior Chloe Cox led the way for the Fortuna girls with fourth-place finishes for each.

Their teammate Lonna Torrez also had a good showing at the two-day tournament and placed fifth in her bracket.

The Eureka Loggers were also represented on the podium, with sophomore Vivian Olivares placing sixth in her bracket.

And rounding out a strong showing for the league, two Del Norte girls placed seventh in their brackets, Channey Schaad and Adenne Schaad.

The top four in each bracket advance to next week’s state championships, with Bickmore, Cox and Bibby all qualifying.

The H-DN boys also enjoyed a big weekend, with 14 wrestlers placing.

More to come on the boys tournament.
