Del Norte Warriors crowned H-DN wrestling champions

By Ray Hamill — The Del Norte boys have been crowned H-DN champions in wrestling after a big day at the league meet in Fortuna on Saturday.

The Warriors won four of the 14 weight classes and had seven wrestlers place second on the way to scoring 211 points.

They had the championship secured before the finals took place.

Six of the eight H-DN teams had at least one individual winner, showcasing the depth of the league this winter.

Hoopa also scored four individual winners, while the Arcata Tigers took home three titles.

Fortuna, McKinleyville and St. Bernard’s each also won an individual championship.

Hoopa placed second in the race for the team title with 144 points, followed by Fortuna (118), Arcata (113), St. Bernard’s (101), McKinleyville (96), Eureka (60) and Ferndale (8).

Del Norte freshman Chulhs Bates won the title at 106 pounds, with teammates Isaac Lopez (138), Colton Schaad (160) and Jase Mintonye (195) each also winning their weight divisions.

For Hoopa, Kae-wett Nelson continued his impressive season with an individual title at 170, with heavyweight teammate Gerard Marshall placing first in his bracket as expected.

Anotonio Correa also placed first for Hoopa at 182, as did freshman Tyler Lewis at 220.

Arcata standout Joshua Hannan led his team’s charge with a championship at 132, with teammates Dakota Sanders and Isaiah Bell each also winning titles at 113 and 126, respectively.

Fortuna’s Mason Evanow also won at 120, as did McKinleyville’s Jace Thomson at 145 and St. Bernard’s Jack Kramer at 152.

Del Norte’s Alex Osborne (113), Eric Stansbury (120), James Gensaw (126), Curtis Bartley (132), Soren Lewis (152), RJ Loftin (170) and Reynaldo Marrinez (182) each placed second in their weight divisions.

McKinleyville’s William Baumgarten (138) and John Randall (220) each also placed second, as did Fortuna’s Cayden Spiers (106), Eureka’s Iain Clark (145), Arcata’s Gavin Smith (160), Hoopa’s Jason Marshall (195) and St. Bernard’s Tucker Rice (heavyweight).

The top three finishers in each weight class all advance to next weekend’s North Coast Section championships.
