H-DNL announces playoff scenarios for NCS, Niclai tournament berths

Ray Hamill/HumboldtSports.com – St. Bernard’s Jack Stark and Hoopa’s Sequoia Valentine in action at St. Bernard’s on Tuesday night.

By Ray Hamill — The top three Big 5 seeds for the Dick Niclai Tournament have been set, but things remain wide open in the Little 4.

After clinching a second straight league championship with a victory at Eureka on Tuesday night, the Arcata boys secured the top seed for next week’s tournament, as well as the league’s automatic North Coast Section playoff spot.

The McKinleyville Panthers, who had a bye on Tuesday, will receive the No. 2 seed, while the Fortuna Huskies will receive the No. 3 seed after their win at Del Norte.

The seedings picture in the Little 4 is not so clearcut, with the championship and the race for third place set to go down to the final night of action.

St. Bernard’s and South Fork, who split two league games, are tied atop the standings with identical 4-1 records with one game remaining each.

Both teams will close out league play on Thursday night, with St. Bernard’s hosting Ferndale and South Fork playing at Hoopa.

If both teams should win or lose, they will be crowned co-champions and will meet in a playoff game on Saturday night at 7 p.m. to determine the No. 1 seed for the Niclai tournament and the league’s automatic NCS playoff berth.

The game will be played at St. Bernard’s after a coin flip to determine the venue.

Ferndale and Hoopa, meanwhile, are tied for third in the standings with records of 1-4.

Should both teams win or lose their games on Thursday, they will face off in a playoff game on Saturday afternoon (2 p.m.) at Hoopa to determine the third and final seed for the Niclai tournament, with the venue having been determined by a coin flip.
