It was a successful weekend for a pair of Humboldt AAU girls 14U volleyball club teams, which each placed first at the Ashland Volleyball Tournament on Sunday.
The club’s Team Orange, coached by Tish Osborne, won its championship match 2-1, while Team Black, coached by Kali Cummings, won its championship showdown 2-0.
The Humboldt teams are made up of players from several different local junior high schools and the tournament included 23 travel teams from Northern California and Southern Oregon.
“The girls are from six different local junior high schools and are learning to play together as teams,” Osborne said. “They all get along great and are very supportive of each other.”
The young girls’ hard work is paying off.
“These girls worked really hard this weekend and gave it their all,” Cummings said. “This weekend they played like a team and a family. They are always excited when they are playing and never get down when they are having trouble against a team.
“They really brought the energy and that’s what put us on top of everyone else.”
Team Orange also placed first at a recent tournament in Medford.
Team Orange includes: Eddy May Hale, Kyla Kinyah, Sabrina Macdonald, Hazel Marshall, Tiarah Maualaga, Savanhie Phanhsavang, Shia Sarchett, Sam Sundberg, Sariah Vainuku and Kenzie Wallace.
Jaime Purcell also coached the team.
Team Black includes: Alena Battle, Shayla Hoffman, Skylar Gifford, Kloe Bryant, Eliana Kanzler, Lilly Sharp, Lilly Bowman, Melanie Jackson, Natalie McLaughlin and Lotus Bowman.
