By Ray Hamill — It should be a fun showdown next weekend when the top two teams in our rankings face off against each other at Eureka High School.

The Eureka Loggers remain No. 1 for the fourth straight week and are showing no signs of slowing down.

The Loggers are now a perfect 9-0 against H-DNL teams are 4-0 in league play, including an impressive 54-47 victory over McKinleyville on Tuesday.

The surging St. Bernard’s girls, meanwhile, now find themselves alone at No. 2 after edging Del Norte by a point on Saturday for their seventh straight win.

It was the Crusaders’ second win over the Del Norte Warriors this season and they are a very impressive 6-1 against Big 5 teams, a run that has included recent 20-point wins over both Arcata and Fortuna.

McKinleyville and Del Norte both drop one spot this week and find themselves in a tie at No. 3.

The two Big 5 rivals have split a pair of league games this season, with the Panthers avenging an earlier loss at Del Norte with a 63-52 win at Mack High this past week.

There has been little to separate these teams when they’ve played and they could very well meet again in next month’s Dick Niclai tournament, and perhaps even a fourth time in the North Coast Section playoffs.

Rounding out our top five are the Ferndale Wildcats, who dropped a Little 4 game at St. Bernard’s on Thursday night.

An up-and-down Arcata girls team remains on the bubble, and could move back into the top five with a win at home to Ferndale on Wednesday.
