Crusaders win Little 4 opener ahead of big Saturday showdown

By Ray Hamill — The St. Bernard’s Crusaders comfortably won their league opener in girls basketball on Friday night, getting the better of visiting South Fork by a score of 57-25.

Laila Florvilus scored a team-high 14 points in the win, as the SB girls improved to 11-2 overall and 1-0 in the Little 4.

Jocelyn Sundberg and Rihanna Fontenot each finished with 10 points in the win, while Madelyn Shanahan added eight.

Crusaders head coach Matt Tomlin was able to go deep to his bench for much of the game, with eyes on a big matchup that could have playoff implications at Arcata on Saturday night.

The Cubs had just five players suited up and continued to battle through all four quarters.

The visitors were led by senior Macy Yarbrough, who scored a game-high 15 points.

Sophomore Arianna Rose added seven points for the South Fork girls.

The Crusaders will travel to Arcata for the big Saturday night showdown that will impact both teams’ playoff positioning.

The SB girls are currently ranked No. 4 in the North Coast Section in Division 4, according to MaxPreps, while Arcata is just three spots back.
