POLL CLOSED
By Ray Hamill — This year’s Big 5 in boys basketball could be one of the most wide open in recent years, with all five teams seemingly in contention and the race for the pennant likely to go down to the wire.
The Fortuna Huskies and McKinleyville Panthers have arguably been the most impressive of the five teams through the tournament season, while a young Arcata Tigers team has been building momentum and won’t be short of talent as they look to defend their league title.
The wild cards could be Del Norte and Eureka, each of which has enjoyed an up-and-down early season.
Warriors head coach Cris Rice believes there will be little to separate the five teams.
“I don’t think there’s a favorite,” he said. “I think a team with a 5-3 or 6-2 record will win it all.
“It should be fun. It should be exciting.”
It certainly appears to be the most wide open of all four local leagues this winter.
The action gets under way on Wednesday night, with Arcata traveling to Fortuna and McKinleyville hosting Del Norte.
The Loggers begin their league campaign on Friday when they welcome Del Norte, while Fortuna plays at McKinleyville on the same night in a game that could be pivotal in the race for the championship.
Let us know who you think will win this year’s Big 5 and we’ll publish the results on Wednesday afternoon.
