The College of the Redwoods men’s basketball team suffered a surprising loss to Yuba at the Santa Rosa tournament on Friday, losing 77-44.
Kai Purcell scored a team-high 12 points in the loss, which ended an eight-game winning streak.
“Yuba unleashed a complete barrage on us in every facet of the game,” CR head coach Ryan Bisio said. “They were more prepared, more physical, more athletic and more committed. They are a very impressive team.”
Jon Nchekwube added 10 points in the loss, which was just the second on the season for the Corsairs, who are now 15-2.
“Obviously a very humbling experience for us,” Bisio said. “A shock to the system, even a bit embarrassing.
“But I know our guys have the character to grow and eventually benefit from going through such a traumatic experience together.”
The CR men will play for third place at the tournament on Saturday at 6 p.m. against either Mendocino or Los Medanos.
Yuba improved to 9-2.
The College of the Redwoods women, meanwhile, lost for the second straight day at the Moorpark tournament.

The consistent Rachel Valdez also had a good game and finished with eight points.
With the loss, which was the team’s third straight, the Corsairs dropped to 4-9.
They close out tournament play against Mt. San Antonio at 6 p.m. on Saturday.
