South Fork boys, Fortuna girls begin tournament play

A pair of H-DNL basketball teams tipped off their respective tournaments on Wednesday night, with the Fortuna girls playing at Healdsburg and the South Fork boys in action at Potter Valley.

The Cubs opened with a victory, defeating Willits 52-30 to go to 3-2 on the season.

Tommy Rotbergs continued to shine in the win and finished with a game-high 18 points, while teammate Jonah Wansick had a breakout performance and scored 13 points.

The Cubs also did a good job containing the Wolverines offense.

“Defense and ball movement was the key for us tonight,” head coach Taylor Morrow said.

The Cubs will continue tournament play on Friday .

The Fortuna girls, meanwhile fell 62-45 to Justin-Siena.

Grace Scilacci led the Huskies with 15 points, while Haylee Youkey chipped in seven.

With the loss, the Fortuna girls are now 2-4.

They will try to rebound on Friday at 4:30 p.m. when they play the loser of today’s opening round game between McKinleyville and Ukiah.
