Purcell the player of the game, as Corsairs win again

A busy College of the Redwoods men’s basketball team will head into Thanksgiving with a record of 9-1 after an 81-62 victory over Merced at CR on Monday.

The Corsairs have played all 10 of their game in just 17 days in what has been a hectic start to the new campaign, but a new-look roster has not disappointed and head coach Ryan Bisio has done a good job replacing four key starters from last year’s team in what has been a seamless transition so far.

Returning all-state selection Jon Nchekwube has been key to the impressive start and finished with 22 points in Monday’s win, while newcomer Trey Neff also impressed with 21 points.

But it was the tea defense that set the tone against Merced.

“This was as complete of a defensive performance as we’ve had this year,” Bisio said, “Our guys executed the scheme with a lot of guts and focus.”

Jett Cheong also continued to impress in the win and finished with 16 points, while the ever-improving Kai Purcell added 14 points.

“Joh had a very effective second half,” the head coach added. “Trey stayed steady the whole game.

“Jett was marvelous today with his tempo and change of pace.

“Kai, in my view, was the player of the game. He played a masterful floor game on each end.”

The CR men will return to action on Saturday when they host Marin at 2 p.m.
