By Ray Hamill — It’s been a busy fall for St. Bernard’s junior Madelyn Shanahan.

And quite a successful one too.

This week, the multi-sport standout was named MVP of the Little 5 in volleyball and co-MVP of the Little 4 in soccer, capping an outstanding fall for her.

Shanahan was a force for both teams, leading each to a league title, but she played a far bigger role than just that.

“Maddy is a natural leader,” St. Bernard’s volleyball head coach Wendy Joyner said. “She’s not complacent, she works hard and strives to improve every day.”

Her soccer coach Brian Finck echoed the sentiment.

“Maddy is a special player. She is like having another coach on the field,” he said. “She is intelligent, hard-working determined, motivates her teammates and leads by example. Everything a coach could ask for in a player.”

Shanahan led the Crusaders to an 8-0 league record in volleyball and lost just once in Little 4 soccer.

She capped a hugely successful fall by helping the SB girls win a third consecutive North Coast Section championship in soccer.

“Maddy has always been a great teammate,” Joyner said. “She pushes herself and her team.”

The Crusaders coach also believes she has the tools to play collegiately.

“She works off season and could definitely play at the next level,” Joyner said. “I’m excited to have her for one more year and am excited to see where her skills and her love of the game takes her.”

Joining her on this year’s Little 5 All-League Volleyball team are teammates Kodi Meyer, Ella Jimenez and Rihana Fontenot.

Six other players from around the league also were selected, including Ferndale’s Kyla Albee and Tia Henrickson.

Hoopa’s Nae-Rew Martin and Tatianna Colegrove also were included, along with South Fork’s Starla Delore and Northeast Prep’s Sara Chianni.
