By Ray Hamill — If anyone can upset the odds and beat Del Norte to the Big 4 championship, our readers believe it will be St. Bernard’s.
Participants in this week’s online poll asking which Big 4 team is best positioned to challenge the Warriors voted overwhelmingly in favor of the Crusaders.
St. Bernard’s received 55.5 percent of the votes cast over the past 48 hours, well ahead of Eureka, which received 33 percent.
Fortuna, meanwhile, received 11.5 percent of the votes.
The league gets under way on Friday night, when the Crusaders (3-4) travel to Fortuna (3-4).
On Saturday night, Eureka (3-2) hosts Del Norte (5-1).
The Warriors have been close to unstoppable so far this season, with their only loss coming on the road against a very good South Medford team.
The Loggers will be hoping for an upset win in their opener, although they will have to play substantially better than in a recent 45-0 loss to Del Norte in a non-league showdown.
Friday’s game at Husky Field, meanwhile, is arguably the most intriguing of the weekend.
The Huskies, who are coming off a bye, have won two straight games to build some momentum heading into league play, but the Crusaders have the physicality along the line to match up with most opponents and have steadily improved as the season has progressed.
And that might be why our readers believe they are best positioned to challenge Del Norte for this year’s league championship.
Thank you to everyone who took the time to vote.
