Loggers get important breakthrough win at Fortuna

The Eureka boys kept the pressure on H-DNL frontrunners Arcata with a huge 2-0 win at Fortuna.

One year after knocking off the Tigers for the first time in over a decade, the Eureka boys continued to showcase their program’s development with their first win over the Huskies in more than a decade.

More importantly, they stretched their unbeaten run to 10 straight and kept their league championship ambitions on track.

With two games remaining — at home to South Fork and at Del Norte — the Loggers are now 7-0-3 in league play, while the Tigers remain 7-0-2 after a bye on Tuesday.

Arcata plays at Del Norte on Saturday and will play South Fork and McKinleyville next week to close out.

Ean Savage continued to impress for Eureka in Tuesday’s win and gave his team the lead after a nice build-up by the Loggers.

The ever-dangerous Tomas Paoli made it 2-0 with a wonderful volley from the edge of the penalty area after a corner kick.

Aidan Sloper also had a good game between the posts, as the Eureka boys posted a fourth straight shutout.

The Eureka defense, which is anchored by Joe Morris and Jiagdae Her, has developed into a team strength.

Savage and the Logegers front line did a good job pressuring Fortuna, according to head coach Eddie Garcia, while Paoli combined effectively with Will Mooney to control the tempo in midfield.

In other H-DNL games on Tuesday, Del Norte broke a 1-1 with two unanswered second-half goals on the way to a 3-1 win at St. Bernard’s.

  1. Johnny on the spot goal in video, nice volley aided by the change in arc after defender’s header attempt to clear off corner kick failed to exit the penalty area.

Words of encouragement is that if defending player was marking the goal scorer in the proper deeper position, the volley opportunity never transpires. Corner Kicks are always man-2-man marking, with zone form integrity by back line.
