The Del Norte Warriors were crowned at least co-champs of the Big 5 in volleyball on Tuesday night, and they will look to clinch the pennant outright with a victory in either of their final two games.
While the Del Norte girls had a bye, their closest challengers, the Eureka Loggers, fell in four sets to Fortuna, handing at least a co-championship to the Warriors.
With the loss, Eureka dropped to 4-2 in league play, while Del Norte remains unbeaten at 6-0.
Kylee Fennell, Sarah Keating and Grace Scilacci were among the many standouts for Fortuna, as was libero Courtney Wilson, who “had an excellent game,” according to head coach Rob Hayes.
“Everybody played well,” the coach said. “They just came out together as a team with really great energy, and they kept it up all night long.
“They played good fast volleyball like they’re capable of doing.”
Mariah Napoleon led the Loggers with nine kills, while teammate Isis Poteet had eight kills and a block.
Maeghan Hampton added six kills and five aces.
Del Norte plays at Eureka on Thursday and closes out league play at home to Fortuna on Tuesday.
The Arcata Tigers also won on Tuesday, defeating McKinleyville in four sets, 25-17, 25-21, 20-25, 27-25.
Sydney Hasselquist led the way for Arcata with 18 kills, while teammate Quincy Collins had 12 kills.
Caroline Dieker also had a good night and finished with eight kills and three blocks, while Audrey Dart chipped in seven kills.
