The Ferndale girls are building some momentum at the business end of the high school volleyball season.
The Wildcats followed a good recent run in the Little 4 by winning the championship at the weekend Arcata Small School Varsity, Large School JV Tournament.
Ferndale defeated the Arcata JVs in the championship game, rallying for a 17-25, 25-20, 15-12 victory.
“Arcata has an impressive team and it was a battle to to get the win,” Ferndale assistant coach Terra Albee said. “Our girls dug the volleyball well and served consistently.”
The ever-consistent Kyla Albee was instrumental in the championship match, finishing with 11 kills, seven digs, four blocks and two assists, while teammate Saige Machado added seven digs, an ace and a block.
The Cats got stronger as the day wore on.
“We started the day out slow but seemed to get in our groove in the final matches of the day when it really counted,” Terra Albee said.
Lexie Blake also had a good championship game and finished with six digs, while Jordan Soderman added five assists and two kills, and Clara Albee had four assists.
Tis Henrikson and Rainy Rodriguez each also played well for the Cats.
The tournament featured 16 teams.
The Arcata JVs, meanwhile, are enjoying a big season in the Big 5, where they are undefeated with two games remaining.
The Tigers will turn their attention back to league play when they play McKinleyville on Tuesday night.
