The St. Bernard’s girls continued to build momentum in volleyball with a strong showing against some Big 5 teams over the weekend, as they went 2-2 at the Brookings tournament.

The Little 4 leaders, who moved two wins clear in the league standings with a key victory at Hoopa on Thursday, got the better of McKinleyville and Rogue River in tournament play, while dropping two games to Arcata.

Maddy Shanahan had a good tournament and led the Crusaders with six kills a game, as did Kodi Meyer, who averaged 12 assists.

The reliable Nina Clayton also continued to serve well, as did Marce Davilla and Ella Jimenez.

In college volleyball, meanwhile, College of the Redwoods also traveled to Oregon to play Umpqua on Monday, falling 25-18, 25-19, 25-19.

Ella Day had a team-high seven kills in the loss, while Perla Ceballos had 22 digs.

“Our defense kept us in the game,” head coach Petra Lorenzi said. “They did a good job digging, defending and on service receive, something we’ve been working on.”

The Corsairs open conference play at Butte on Friday.
