By Ray Hamill — McKinleyville and Fortuna both won their opening two games at the Mack girls soccer tournament on Friday, as three of the four local teams involved advanced to the semifinal round.
The host Panthers shut out both of their opponents on opening day to top Group Two, defeating Del Norte 3-0 in their first game and following that with a comfortable 7-0 over Fort Bragg.
The Huskies were equally impressive in their first two games on the way to winning Group One.
If the opening day is any indication, the two Big 5 rivals could meet in Saturday’s championship game, although both will first have to take care of business in their respective semifinals.
Ferndale also impressed on opening day, bouncing back from the loss to Fortuna and defeating Willits 2-0 to place second in Group One.
The Wildcats will play McKinleyville in the semifinals on Saturday at 11:30 a.m.
Fortuna will play Fort Bragg in the other semifinal, also at 11:30.
The Timberwolves defeated Del Norte 2-0 in their opening game, before falling to the host school later in the day.
All games feature just 30-minute halves.
Del Norte and Willits will play in the tournament consolation game at 10 a.m. on Saturday.
Also on Saturday, the third-place game will be played at 1 p.m., with the championship game set for 1:30 p.m.
