VOLLEYBALL ROUNDUP — Tigers, Loggers top L4 opponents

The defending Big 5 champions continued their impressive start to the new volleyball season on Tuesday night with a straight-sets victory over Hoopa.

The Arcata girls won 25-11, 25-17, 25-11 and improved to 5-2.

Sydney Hasselquist led the offense with 11 kills, while teammate Quincy Collins also was instrumental and added five kills and two blocks.

Nora Talty also had a big night and finished with 24 assists and seven aces, while Olivia Railsback chipped in four aces and finished with 20 service points.

The Tigers will look to continue their fast start when they host St. Bernard’s on Thursday night.

Tuesday’s game was the season opener for Hoopa.

Tatianna Colegrove had a big night for the Warriors, as did setter Nae-rew Martin, who “was a standout all over the court, according to head coach Amber McCovey-Billings.

No final stats were immediately available for the Warriors, who play at HayFork on Thursday.

Loggers top crosstown rivals

The Eureka Loggers also won on Tuesday, defeating St. Bernard’s in three sets, 25-10, 25-18, 25-8

Eureka’s Isis Poteet continued to impress and finished with a team-high 11 kills, as well as two blocks, while teammate Meghan Hampton had nine kills.

The always dangerous Mariah Napoleon also had a strong showing and finished with six kills and five aces, while Anisha Rechelluul had 17 assists.

No stats were immediately available for St. Bernard’s.

The Eureka JVs also won, defeating St. Bernard’s, 25-16, 25-9.
