By Ray Hamill — Klayre Barres scored her first college goal on Thursday, as the Chico State women defeated Central Washington 2-0.

The former Eureka Logger netted on a free kick in the final minutes to help seal the win, as the Wildcats improved to 2-0-1.

The sophomore defender quickly adapted to the collegiate level as a freshman last year when she started all 18 games for the team.

And she appears to have carried that form over to this season.

Barres graduated Eureka in 2021.

Corsairs open at Mendocino

Two other former Loggers combined to score for the College of the Redwoods men, who dropped their season opener at Mendocino College on Thursday, 2-1.

Jesus Parra Leon, who transferred back to the area this season after a year at Santa Rosa, had an immediate impact with his new team and scored the lone goal off an assist from 2022 Eureka graduate, Luis Romero.

The Corsairs play at Contra Costa College on Friday.

Humboldt men remain unbeaten

The Lumberjacks opened a two-game stand in Hawaii with a 1-1 tie against Hawaii Pacific on Thursday.

Alex Lopez scored off an assist from Devin Hauenstein for Cal Poly’s only goal of the game.

It was the team’s third straight tie to start the season.

The Jacks play at Hawaii Hilo on Saturday.

Cal Poly Humboldt Athletics – Frida Duran Arellano had a goal and an assist for the Lumberjacks on Thursday.

Humboldt women win their home opener

The Humboldt women fared better on Thursday, defeating William Jessup University 2-0 at College Creek Field.

Emma McChristie opened the home team’s account in the sixth minute with an assist from teammate Frida Duran Arellano.

The Jacks doubled the lead in the 61st minute, when Duran Arellano netted off a ball from Grace Johnson.

Goalie Carson Thomson-Terrel had two saves and recorded her second straight shutout for the 1-1-1 Jacks.

The Humboldt women will host Holy Names at noon on Saturday.
